In 1930, an Australian taxi driver Charlie Heard accepted a most unusual request from an elderly spinster and her two companions. His mission was to drive them from Melbourne to Darwin and back. He was paid £300 or about AUD$19,000 at today’s rate.
This year, Tourism Western Australia is recreating that journey in a modern day taxi on an epic odyssey around the entire state of Western Australia stopping at various extraordinary attractions. They have selected the taxi driver and now the mission is to look for the passengers to join in this momentous, ambitious and unforgettable journey around Western Australia in an all expenses paid trip of a lifetime.
Some time between 9 April and 18 June 2010, the chosen Passenger and his/her partner will join one of the legs of the journey. They will discover some of the most fascinating and intriguing facets of Western Australia in these journeys and some of the world’s superlatives: the world’s oldest outdoor theatre, oldest art, the world’s largest fringing reef and a swim with the world’s biggest fish - all without having to pay a single cent.
If you love rugged adventure, have relentless enthusiasm and a ‘never say die’ spirit, then nominate yourself for this Extraordinary taxi ride today. You will discover extraordinary people, places and stories in this most extraordinary place through a historical re-enactment of a taxi ride.
