I have been using the Nokia phone GPS functionality since my previous two Nokia phones, the Nokia Navigator 6110 and the Nokia N85. The Nokia N8 comes with the OVI Navigation, Nokia’s own GPS software which is now free for life. In the older versions, Nokia charged a yearly subscription fee.
The software works in both landscape and portrait, which is nice and gives you a choice on which way you want to view the screen. Locking of the GPS is almost immediate thanks to Assisted GPS.
The downside of the Nokia N8 is the maps are not as updated as the free maps from malsingmaps. Below is an example of the Ovi Navigation map to my home where the road is still missing when the road already exist for 2 years. It would be nice if Nokia can open the Nokia Ovi Navigation to use other map sources like malsingmaps.

Twitter Updates
Actually you need to download the map,not because it is not update..you just need to download the map, which area do you want to..it up to you…(i know this from other maxis#10 reviewer..:)…)
Hi Nasrulz, yes I downloaded the latest map from Ovi but it’s still not as updated as malsingmaps which is community driven. Some roads that already exist in malsingmaps since two years ago is still not updated in the latest version of the Nokia Ovi map.
Owh..really…thank for the information…keep up your N8 review..never miss to read ur review..:)
Thanks Nasrulz!
The Ovi GPS Navigation software seems not bad. It is the first thing that attracts me on Nokia phones
Hi Alvin, the software is quite good and simple to use. Almost as simple as Garmin. My only complain is the maps. Not updated. Would be great if the Ovi Maps can use malsingmaps.
